An Increased demand very evident at Simmental Sale in Tullamore on Saturday April 16thJudge: Paul McArdle, Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan.
The Overall Bull Champion, Valleyview Gus, was exhibited by Noel Jagoe, Drinagh, Co. Cork. This Delfur Decider sired January `15 born bull was bred by Patrick Ryan, Boulteen, Enniskeane, Co. Cork and is out of a Seepa Tee Jay dam Valleyview Cara. He was purchased by Oliver Moran, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon to run with his commercial suckler herd at €2900.
The top price of the day at €5200 went for the Reserve Bull Champion, Clonagh Foot Loose, exhibited by Garrett Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise. Born in December `14 the ET bull is sired by Kilbride Farm Dragoon and is out of a Raceview King dam Corlesmore Willow. Joe Brady, Tullyco, Cootehill, Co. Cavan was the purchaser to join his Drumnagar Herd.
Next up at €4500 was Viscount Goliath, a Kilbride Farm Newry sired bull sold by Jack Saunders, Cullohill, Co. Laois. John McCormack, Clonlara, Co. Clare purchased this February `15 bull who is out of a Raceview King dam Seaview Bliss.
Hitting the €3800 mark was Marsha Gruffalo exhibited by Michael Glennon, Ballydangan, Athlone, Co. Roscommon. This February `15 born bull is sired by Curaheen Buffalo and is out of Celtic Bridget, a Hillcrest Champion dam. Seamus & Jennie Aherne, Cappamore, Co. Limerick purchased this bull for their Towerhill and Rubyjen Herds.
Selling at €3700 for Lyndsey Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise was Jennalyn Geromino sired by Kilbride Farm Dragoon. Another February `15 born bull and out of the Carnkern Titan dam Clonagh Wee-Duffy this bull was purchased by Bertie & Karl William, Kilmurray, Tullamore.
Also reaching the €3700 mark was Auroch Gold P an Auroch Deuter PP bull sold by David Wall, Newcastle, Co. Dublin. This March `15 born bull is out of a Darsham Playboy sired dam Aurock Wave and was purchased by Declan Loughran, Knockbridge, Dundalk to run with his Pedigree & Commercial herd.
Joe Kelly, Ballynacally, Ennis, Co. Clare sold his Anatrim Diamond sired bull, Mount George, at €3300 to Mark Molloy, Ballycumber, Co. Offaly at €3300. At 14 months this bull was out of a Glebefarm Tyson dam Mount Carol.
John Touhy, Whitegate, Co. Clare sold his two bulls at €3100 & €3050 respectively. Selling at €3100 was an Auroch Bullet sired bull Seafort Gunshot which was bred by James Costello, Dromard, Co. Sligo. This bull is out of a Curaheen Viking dam Seafort Brona and was purchased by Peter Anderson, Ballitore, Co. Kildare. At €3050 was his Monaduff Lord sired bull, Coose Gallileo, who is out of a Herkules dam Fearna Aspen. Ellis Farms, Drinagh, Co. Cork were the buyers of this lot to run with their dairy herd.
Selling at €3000 for Billy Connell, Glynwood, Baylin, Athlone was Glynwood Gavin. Peter Kelly, Woodlawn, Ballinasloe purchased the Curaheen Tyson sired bull who is out of a Magheracrigan Special dam Hillcrest Titsy.
Overall in the bulls there was an 81% clearance with prices ranging from €5200 back to €1800 and an average price of €2800.
A smaller than usual heifer selection met with good demand resulting in an 83% clearance and an average price of €2190.
Topping at €3000 was the Reserve Champion, Duff Felicity, exhibited by John & Barry Duffy, Ballybay, Co. Monaghan. This seventeen month old heifer was sired by Seaview Tommy and out of a Hillcrest King dam Duff Vera and was purchased by Maria Caffrey, Ballinagh, Co. Cavan.
The Overall Female Champion, Leeherd Girlie, was exhibited by John Finnegan, Coachford, Co. Cork. At just twelve months this Anatrim Dubai sired heifer who is out of a Freighduff Brendan dam Leeherd Cara sold for €2800.
Hitting the €2700 mark was Mohona Fleck sold by Gordon Salter, Dunmanway, Co. Cork. Sired by Kilbride Farm Bantry and out of a Samark Superman dam Corbally Dottie AOK this this 15 month old heifer was purchased by John Costello, Ennis, Co. Clare.
The Final Simmental Sale of the season will take place at Roscommon on Friday evening, May 13th, where there is expected to be approximately 25 Bulls and 80 Simmental X breeding heifers for sale.

Top Price of €4650 at Simmental Tullamore Sale
The Overall Male Champion went to Seamus Aherne, Cappamore. Co. Limerick with Towerhill Emmett a December 2013 born bull sired by his stockbull Celtic Benny and out of a Hillcrest Jerome dam Towerhill Treasure. The Judge Catherine Farrell was the purchaser for her Heather-View herd at €4000.
The Reserve Champion and top bull price of the day went to Garrett Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise with Clonagh F Super Star. This March 2014 born bull is sired by Banwy T-Rex and is out of a Raceview King dam Milton Seabank. Charles Colthurst, Blarney, Co. Cork was the purchaser at €4250.
Selling at €2950 was Lot 12 Clonagh Flash Gordon again exhibited by Garrett Behan. Another Banwy T-Rex sired bull and this time out of a Monaduff Legend dam Clonagh Brumble Legend, this bull was purchased by Ivan Kidd from Bagnelstown, Co. Carlow.
Bryan McCann from Maynooth, Co. Kildare purchased Clonagh Ebony Dancer ET at €2800. Born in December 2013 this Banwy T-Rex bull was again sired by Raceview Dam Jennalyn Scarlet ET and was exhibited by Garrett Behan.
New exhibitors Stephen & Jack Saunders from Cullohill, Co. Laois took home €2650 for their Kilbride Farm Newry sired bull Viscount First Choice. Born in February 2014 this bull is out of Seaview Bliss by Raceview King and was purchased by John Pollock, Castletown, Navan, Co. Meath.
Hitting the €2550 mark was Mohona Frank exhibited by Gordon Salter, Dunmanway, Co. Cork. The buyer of this 14 month old bull sired by Kilbride Farm Bantry and who was out of a Hillcrest Randy dam Mohona Vanity was John Flattery, Clara. Co. Offaly.
€2500 was the selling price for Grianan Firepower exhibited by Anselm Fitzgerald, Mount Temple, Moate. Ian Lazenby from Gorey, Co. Wexford purchased this March 2014 bull who is sired by Dermody Butcher and out of a Kilbride Farm Newry dam Raceview Bounty Royal.
In the Female Section the Overall Champion went to Lyndsey Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise with Jennalyn Flora Nora. The youngest heifer in the catalogue at 11 months old Flora Nora is sired by Banwy T-Rex and is out of a Ballybane Henry dam Ballybane Nora. This heifer was purchased by Martin Sheridan, Mountnugent, Co. Cavan at €3200.
The Reserve Champion and highest priced animal of the day at €4650 went to Ray Bracken, Daingean, Tullamore with Cruithill Ebba. At just 16 months this Curaheen Wakeman sired heifer is out of a Cruithill Volcano dam Cruithill Ace and was purchased by Eamon Greene, Mullinahone, Co. Tipperary.
Selling at €3000 was Lisnacrann Elderberry for Michael Oliver, Swinford, Co. Mayo. Born in October 2013 Elderberry who was purchased by a repeat customer is sired by Hillcrest Slyvester and out of an Anatrim Jacob Dam Kilcloran Winnie.
The Final Simmental Sale of the season will take place at Roscommon on Friday evening May 15th. Included in this sale will be a selection of Simmental X breeding heifers.
High of €8200 for Champion Bull.In the bull section, the Overall Champion went to a 12 month old bull ‘Rabawn Ernie’ exhibited by John Brady, Swinford, Co. Mayo. This stylish “Curaheen Tyson” bull is out of a homebred “Samark Superman” dam “Rabawn Bliss”. The Sale Judge, Joe Wilson, from Newry, Co. Down fought off competition, firstly from a Pedigree Breeder and finally from a commercial suckler farmer to add this young bull to his “Ballinalare Farm Pedigree Herd”. The Reserve Champion went to Lyndsey Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise, Co. Laois with ‘Jennalyn Dirty Dancer ET’, a December `12 born “Banwy T-Rex” son out of a “Raceview King” cow “Jennalyn Scarlet ET”. This bull was purchased by Dairy Farmer Pat Lane from Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick at €3000. Hitting the €3200 mark was the youngest bull in the sale ‘Auroch Emu ET’ exhibited by James & David Wall, Newcastle, Co. Dublin. Born May `13 and sired by “Auroch Ace ET” out of a “Derrycallaghan Hamilton” dam “Glebefarm Vicky”, John Harrington from Bantry, Co. Cork was the purchaser. John Finnegan, Nadrid, Coachford, Co. Cork received €2500 for Lot 3 in the catalogue ‘Leeherd Dempsey’ from Barry Muldowney, Grovine, Co. Kilkenny. This “Kilbride Farm Newry” bull was born in November `12 and is out of a “Lackabawm Aly” dam “Leeherd Nadrid”. Overall in the bull section there was an average price of €2988 with prices ranging from €1900 to €8200. In the Female Section the Overall Champion went to Garrett Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise with ‘Clonagh Emerald Ruby Star’, a January `13 born heifer sired by “Banwy T-Rex” and out of a “Dirnanean Jacob” dam “Cloneygowan Ruby Star”. This heifer did not reach her reserve and was unsold. The Reserve Champion ‘Mohona Edel’ was exhibited by Gordan Salter, Mohona, Dunmanway, Co. Cork. Born in January `13 this heifer was sired by “Drumlone Anchor” and is out of an “Omorga Volvo” dam “Carbery Bryan”. Aonghus Foley, Granagh, Co. Cork purchased this Lot at €2100. Top Heifer Price of the day at €2850 was paid for Lot 62 ‘Clonagh Emily’ exhibited by Garrett Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise and purchased by David Hazelton, Dungannon, Co. Tyrone. Sired by “Clonagh Wonder Boy” this class winner is out of a “Banwy T-Rex” dam “Clonagh Aine”. Also selling at €2100 was the youngest heifer catalogued ‘Cruithill Enfield’ exhibited by Ray Bracken, Daingean, Tullamore, Co. Offaly. Catherine O`Connell, Banagher, Co. Offaly purchased this “Curaheen Wakeman” heifer who is out of a “Hillcrest Butcher” dam “Monaduff Raven”. The average price for heifers was €1870 ranging from €1500 to €2850.
In the bull section, the Judge Albert Bagnall tipped forward “Littlerock Cracker” as his Overall Champion. exhibited by Benny McNamara from Ballyvaughan in Co. Clare. This December `12 born “Kilbride Farm Newry” sired bull was out of a “Brington Brilliant” homebred dam “Littlerock Ruth 5”. James Ryan, Drangan, Thurles was the purchaser at joint top price of €3500.
Also selling for €3500 was the Reserve Champion “Clonguish Danno” exhibited by Joe & Sean McGarry, Newtownforbes, Co. Longford. This January `12 “Raceview King” son was purchased by John Ryan, Ballydavis, Portlaoise.
Another hitting the €3500 mark was Lot 49 “Clonagh Darling Boy” exhibited by Garrett Behan, Ballyfin Portlaoise. William Champ, Cloneyquin, Portarlington, purchased this “Banwy T-Rex” sired bull born April `12.
Garrett Behan also got €3400 for another “Banwy T-Rex” son “Clonagh Dynamo Star”. This January `12 born bull was purchased by Edward Butler, Danesfort, Co. Kilkenny.
Dairy Farmer, Pat Lane from Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick gave €3300 for Lot 20 exhibited by Anselm Fitzgerald, Moate, Co. Westmeath. This “Banwy T-Rex” bull “Grianan Dictator ET” was born February `12.
Overall in the bull section there was an average price of €2650 with prices ranging from €1900 to €3500.
In a smaller than usual female section the Overall Champion went to David Wall, Newcastle, Co. Dublin with “Curaheen Calista”. This October `11 maiden heifer was sired by “Curaheen Vio” and out of a “Kilbride Farm Newry” dam “Auroch Afton”. This heifer was purchased by Noel McDonnell, Moate, Co. Westmeath at €3400.
The Reserve Heifer Champion went to “Mohona Diana” exhibited by Gordon & Susan Salter, Dunmanway, Co. Cork. Martin Mooney, Shannonharbour, Co. Offaly gave €2850 for this “Curaheen Vio” sired heifer.
The Salter’s also got €2800 for Lot 65 “Mohona Delia”. Born in February `12 this “Curaheen Vio” heifer was purchased by Aonghus Foley, Grenagh, Co. Cork.
The average price for heifers was €2150 ranging from €1650 to €3400.
Tullamore Show & Sale
The last Simmental Society Sale of the Season took place in Tullamore on Saturday May 12th and followed the trend to-date whereby commercial farmers are now focusing on purchasing the top quality lots and are prepared to pay a premium to secure those lots.
Overall Male Champion went to Lyndsey Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise with “Jennalyn Casino ET”, sired by “Banwy T-Rex” and out of a “Rosten Barney” dam “Milton Sapphire ET”. This 16 month old bull sold for €4700 to Terry Barron, Castlebellingham, Co. Louth.
The Reserve Champion and Top Bull price of €4900 went to Garrett Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise with “Clonagh Cracker Rex”. Also sired by “Banwy T-Rex” and out of another “Rosten Barney” dam “Milton Senhorita”, he was purchased by James Ryan, Drangan, Co. Tipperary.
Also reaching the €4000 mark was Class 3 Winner “Raceview Count Royal 528” for Peter & Marion O`Connell, Mallow, Co. Cork. This 13 month old bull was sired by “Raceview Vince Rayanne” and out of a “Raceview King” dam “Raceview Royal Beauty”. He was purchased by Miriam Williams, Dungarvan, Co. Kilkenny.
Overall results in the bull section recorded a 60% clearance with prices ranging between €2000 & €4900 and an overall average price of €2810 which was up from €2600 in 2011.
In the Heifer section there was a clearance of 80% with an average price of €2850, which was up from €2360 in 2011.
Overall Champion Heifer went to Ray Bracken, Tullamore with his 12 month old heifer “Cruithill Cinderella”. Sired by “Curaheen Wakeman” and out of a “Hillcrest King” sired dam “Ballybane Ranch”, she was sold for Top Price of the day at €5000 to Patrick Mooney, Shannonharbour, Co. Offaly.
The Reserve Champion Heifer went to William & Marie O`Riordan, Rathcormac, Co. Cork with “Bridgemount Cathy” sired by “Glebefarm Tyson” and was unsold failing to reach her reserve.

- €3300 to John Duffy, Ballybay, Co. Monaghan for “Duff Becky” sired by “Drehid Tommy” from Dominic Brady, Loughduff, Co. Cavan.
- €3200 to Gordan Salter, Dunmanway, Co. Cork for a “Ballyduff Jeweller” sired heifer “Mohona Cynthia” from Michael Cotter, Maine Bridge, Co. Cork.
- €3100 to Tony O`Leary, Ballincollig, Co. Cork for “Seaview Cleo” by “Seaview Alfie” from Aonghus Foley, Grenagh, Co. Cork.
- €3100 for “Cruithill Chloe” by “Curaheen Wakeman” sold by Ray Bracken, Tullamore to Aonghus Foley, Grenagh, Co. Cork.
- €3100 to Jennie Aherne, Cappamore, Co. Limerick for a “Glebefarm Tyson” sired heifer “Rubyjen Coco Mademois Elle” from Michael Cotter, Maine Bridge, Co. Cork.
- €3000 to John Hession, Partry, Co. Mayo for “Portroyal Centenary” sired by “Curaheen Tyson” from Michael Weston, Dunmore, Co. Galway.
Strong Trade with good clearance at Tullamore Simmental Sale
There was a very brisk trade at last Saturdays Simmental Sale, with quality bulls in keen demand. Bulls averaged €2600 with a 74% clearance.
Overall Male Champion and top price of the day of €4700 went to Ray Bracken, Tullamore for his 13 month old bull “Cruithill Banker”. Sired by his own stock bull “Curaheen Wakeman” and out of a “Ballybane Lad” dam “Ballybane Pauline” the champion was purchased by Moira Lavin, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon.
The Reserve Champion Male went to Garrett Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise with “Clonagh A T Tiger”. William Smith, Geashill, Tullamore paid €4100 for this “Banwy T-Rex” sired bull which was out of a homebred “Freighduff Brendan” dam.
Other notable bull prices were:
- €3400 to Lyndsey Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise from Peter Lambe, Navan for a “Milton Viceroy” sired bull.
- €3300 to Garrett Behan, for a “Monaduff Legend” bull from Stephan McCann, Randelstown, Co. Antrim.
- €3000 to Angela & Gerard Brickley, Coolrain, Portlaoise, for a “Curaheen Tyson” bull from Kevin McManus, Enniskillen.
- €2900 to Lyndsey Behan from Peadar Cullen, Drinagh, Co. Wexford for a “Banwy T-Rex son.
- €2700 to Elizabeth Ormiston, Mullagh, Co. Cavan for a “Drumnagar Vicroy” sired bull from Martin Caherty, Newtownhamilton, Co. Armagh.
- €2700 to Angela & Gerard Brickley for a “Celtic Rock” bull from Raymond Wallace, Enniskillen.
In a smaller than usual heifer section, there was 10 out of the 12 heifers sold to an average price of €2360.
Judge Raymond O`Malley, Ardee also gave the Female Champion & Reserve to Raymond Bracken, Tullamore. The Champion Heifer “Cruithill Blondie” was a 12 month old heifer by his stockbull “Curaheen Wakeman” and out of a “Ballybane Henry” dam “Ballybane Nollaig”. She was sold for top heifer price of €4000 to Patrick Buckley, Tullamore. The Reserve Champion “Cruithill Britney” again by his stockbull “Curaheen Wakeman” was by a “Corah Leader” dam “Ballybane Rosy” James Muldowney, Thurles purchased this heifer at €3100.
Other prices included:
- €2600 to Raymond Bracken, for a “Curaheen Wakeman” heifer from Seamus Hennessy, Poles, Co. Cavan.
- €2500 to Mattie & Gabriel McDonald, Camolin, Co. Wexford for a “Glebefarm Tyson” sired heifer from Francis McCaul, Shercock, Co. Cavan.
Top of €11,000 for Simmental at Tullamore Sale
The last Irish Simmental Society Spring Sale of the season was held in Tullamore on last Saturday May 8th. A year record price of €11,000 was achieved up from a top of €3,000 at this sale last year. A noticeable feature of the sale was the keen demand for the top quality lots with many potential customers going home without a bull having failed in an attempt to purchase some of the top lots.
Top price of €11,000 was paid for the male champion “Auroch Ace” exhibited by David Wall Jnr from Newcastle, Co. Dublin. This “Hillcrest Champion” sired bull was out of a “Raceview King” sired dam “Raceview Misty Jade”. Gerald & Morag Smith (Drumsleed Simmentals) Scotland are the new owners of this 12 month old bull.
The reserve Champion exhibited by Angela & Gerard Brickley, Coolrain, Co. Laois sold for second highest price of €4000 to Tom Bruton, Dunboyne, Co. Meath. “Celtic A-Bull” was sired by “Celtic Vicar” and out of a homebred “Hillcrest Champion” dam

- €3000 to John Finnegan, Coachford, Co. Cork for a “Celtic Highflyer” sired bull purchased by Raymond Wallace, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh.
- €2800 to John Brady, Swinford, Co. Mayo for a bull by “Seaview Tommy” purchased by William & Jenny Cotter, Dripsey, Co. Cork.
- €2400 to Patrick Murphy, Clareen, Co. Offaly from Authur Murray, Co. Armagh for a “Monaduff Legend” sired bull.
A larger than usual entry of bulls for this sale resulted in a 50% clearance with prices ranging between €11000 & €1500, with an average price of €2640
In the female section, there was again a 50% clearance with prices ranging between €3350 and €1200 selling to an average price of €1850. Top price went to the reserve champion female “Broomfield Wee Nina” sold by Paul McArdle, Broomfield, Castleblaney Co. Monaghan. Sired by “Hillcrest Champion”, out of a “Jennalyn Luckyduff” dam and in-calf to “Omorga Volvo”, “Wee Nina” was purchased by Eamon McCluskey, Kilrea, Co. Derry for €3350.
The champion was exhibited by William & Jenny Cotter, Dripsey, Co. Cork. “Dripsey Wing Girl” sired by “Camus Vibrant” was unsold failing to reach her reserve.
