At the Simmental Premier Show & Sale held last Saturday at Roscommon, there was a notable increase in export buyers competing for the quality lots in both bulls & heifers
Top price of €8000 was paid by Joe Wilson, Newry for a January bull sold by Peter & Marion O`Connell, Mallow. “Raceview Valintino-Miracle” sired by “Herkules” was January class winner and was also the National Simmental bull calf champion at Strokestown in September.
The National Yearling Bull Championship was judged on Saturday at Roscommon with the title going to John Fox, Kilfinane Co. Limerick with a “Carnkern Titan” son. This bull “Castlegale Titan” was purchased by well known Scottish breeder, Dorothy Moffat (Innerwick Simmentals) for €6800. Other notable bull prices included:
- €4500 to Paddy & Elaine Hennelly Sligo, for a son of “Gretnahouse Supersonic”
- €4150 to Seamus Aherne, Cappamore for a bull by “Hillcrest Naughty”
- €4000 to Ian Clarke, Sligo for a “Hillcrest Champion sired bull.
- €3800 to David Wall, Newcastle, Dublin for a “Woodhall Premier” bull sold to John Kenny, Ballyduff, Waterford.
- €3350 to Garrett Behan, Portlaoise for a “Dovesfields Gallant” bull – purchased by Scottish farmer, Michael Durno.
- €3000 to Garrett Behan, Portlaoise for a “Raceview King” bull - sold to Northern Ireland.
Overall there was a 58% clearance with an average price of €2950 up €140 on `06.
In the heifer section:
- Top price of €6500 was paid for the reserve yearling sold by Stephen O`Connell, Mallow. This heifer “Raceview Theresa-Melanie” was sired by “Raceview King” and purchased by Martin Heffernan, Templemore.
- €5500 was paid to William & Jenny Cotter, Cork. “Dripsey Tina” by “Omorga Murray” was Yearling Champion and was bought by Joe Wilson, Newry.
- The Senior heifer champion shown by John Govin, Claremorris was withdrawn at €2700.
- “Millbrook Terry” by “Dovesfields Gallant” was the Junior heifer Champion for John Smith, Oldcastle and was purchased by Elizabeth Ormiston Mullagh, Cavan for €3000.
- Peter & Marion O`Connell showed the Weanling heifer champion by “Ballyduff Jeweller. Martin Heffernan Templemore was the purchaser at €2600.
- Peter & Marion O`Connell also sold a “Raceview Nigel” heifer to Frank Kelly, Enniskillen for €5000.
Overall demand for females was strong with a 73% clearance and an average price of €2350 (€2060 including draft sales).
There were two draft heifer sales with the following results. Garrett Behan, Ballyfin Portlaoise sold 8 out of 9 to an average price of €1525 and Denis O`Halloran sold 6 out of 8 to average €1533.
