The highest price of the year for a Simmental bull was achieved at the 4 Herds reduction sale last Saturday in Mountrath, when John Murphy, Knockane Simmentals bought David Wall’s young bull Curaheen Vosco, just short of 8 months old, for €8,500. The bull had been placed 2nd in the National Calf Championships in September, despite having been born only on 27th March. Vosco is by Carnkern Titan and out of Raceview Merle-Beauty, the mother of last year’s National Calf Champion and record priced €20,000 Curaheen Tyson.
Other notable prices in the sale were €6,200 paid by Martin Regan for the 10 year old cow Celtic Homemaker, who has already produced two sons that have won National Championships. Next highest priced was Celtic Homemaker’s 8 month old daughter by Hillcrest Jerome sold to Northern Ireland buyer, and well known Perth exhibitor Adrian Richardson, for €5,500.
Overall the sale had a 78% clearance, with Cows averaging €2,875, bulling heifers €2,580 and 2007 born weanling heifers €2,000.
