Sligo got the top price of €1,420 for a 480 kgs. heifer i.e. €940 with her weight. She was purchased by Noel Maguire, Ballinalee, Co. Longford. James Costello sold 8 heifers to average €665 above their average weight of 433 kgs. Buyers travelled from far a-field to purchase heifers with Dan Sullivan, Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry purchasing 7 heifers at an average of €554 with their average weight of 423 kgs. Noel Maguire, Ballinalee, Co. Longford bought 5 heifers at an average price of €1,192 and Niall McClean, Co. RECORD PRICES FOR WEANLINGS
In the weanling trade record prices were paid for outstanding calves. Declan Oates, Castlegal, Co. Sligo sold the two highest priced weanlings at €3,250 and €2,600 to James Gallagher, Cashel North, Lavagh, Ballymote, Co. Sligo, a record price for the sale. James Gallagher was a repeat buyer as he paid €2,400 in 2005 for a weanling also from Declan Oates. Paul Cryan, Ballymote, Co. Sligo paid €2,050 for a weanling sold by Bertie Houston, Co. Donegal and Bertie also got €2,000 from Stephen Govin, Mayo Abbey, Co. Mayo for another of his calves. James Costello, Skreen, Co. Sligo sold a weanling to Gerry Lenehan, Rathlee, Co. Sligo for €1,700. Padriac Colleary, Enniscrone, Co. Sligo sold 7 weanlings averaging €613 above their average weight of 350 kgs. Alan Taylor, Bunninadden, Co. Sligo sold 7 weanlings for and average of €505 above their average weight of 354 kgs.
Every year the quality of the cattle on offer improves and this reflected in the distances that buyers travelled to purchase the quality stock and also shows the scarcity of good breeding heifers

RECORD €20,000 FOR SIMMENTAL BULL
The Simmental Breed in Ireland saw a new record price of €20,000 paid for a 10-month-old bull at Roscommon on Saturday last. "Curaheen Tyson" bred and sold by David Wall from Newcastle Co. Dublin was the January Champion on Saturday and was also the National Calf Champion at Strokestown earlier in the year. "Tyson" is sired by the well known sire "Hillcrest Champion" and is out of a "Raceview King" bred dam. When auctioneer Tom Cox dropper his hammer a joint partnership between Angela & Gerard Brickley (Celtic Simmentals) & Martin & Mary Regan (Corrib Simmentals) had outbid opposition from both N. Ireland and Scotland. When asked afterwards about the bull, Gerard explained that "604kgs at 8 months - a phenomenal weight and for a bull that had enough quality to win the All-Ireland" attracted him to the bull. The new owner's plans to collect semen for sale as well as use the bull on both herds.
Overall the trade for bulls would be best described at steady with an average price excluding the record priced bull of €2450, down €200 on `05. John Connaughton exhibited the national Yearling Champion "Ballybane Sam 41" and was sold to a Scottish breeder for €4150. Another Scottish breeder Andrew Sleigh, paid €4500 for a 10-month-old bull sold by Denis O`Halloran for Tulla, Co. Clare.
In the female section there was very keen demand for the quality heifers on offer.
- The Senior Champion heifer was shown by Declan Oates and remained unsold. The reserve Senior heifer sired by "Hillcrest King" exhibited by Eamon McKiernan was sold for €4100.
- The Junior Champion by Ballyduff Jeweller was shown by Matthew Goulding, Ballyduff Co. Kerry and was sold for €3650.
- The Yearling Champion heifer was shown by William Cotter Dripsey Co.Cork sired by "Omorga Murray" was sold for €3150. The reserve Yearling exhibited by Ian Clarke, Sligo was sold for €4500.
